Feb

While she lacks the gymnastic wizardry of Nadia Comaneci, her Romanian country mate, Maria Luca has made some neat moves of her own.

Nine years ago, Rodica and Mike Luca and their children left Romania for the freedom and opportunities they knew they would find in the United States. While no longer under communist rule, Romania remains a challenge for young people to grow and prosper, said Maria, who is now 18.

After a brief time in Corona, the family moved to Orange County.

It's a memory of when she started her new life.

It's the day she celebrates Corpus Christi. It's the day in 1982 when she stepped off a Greyhound bus after years in Romania and swore she found heaven.

She shares that memory through flowers.

"The love everyone has for flowers is the love I have for Corpus Christi," she said.

Romania battles Hungary for investment spotlight

Feb

With poor infrastructure and high levels of bureaucracy and corruption, Romania is still far from being foreign investors’ top target. But, for now at least, it has several advantages over its neighbor, Hungary. Bosch, DeLonghi and Tata Motors are some of the companies that have announced their intentions to invest in Romania.

The surprise, including for the ranking members of the Democrat-Liberal party (PDL), the senior partner in the ruling coalition, was that the reshuffle would affect all of the party's cabinet ministers, not just the unpopular ones.

Harsh IMF approach courts disaster in Romania

Feb
08

NEW YORK, Feb 8 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The IMF is courting disaster in Romania. The fund's draconian conditions led Bucharest to cut public sector wages by 25 percent, far more than elsewhere. Now Romania's prime minister Emil Boc has resigned and anti-reform forces have been emboldened. Excessive IMF rigour could do lasting harm.

The fund has been trying to soften its fearsome reputation. Managing Director Christine Lagarde has argued that the IMF should be less harsh, admitting that "consolidating too quickly can hurt the recovery and worsen job prospects."
